Support Yourself and Your LGBTQ+ Friends This Pride Month

Happy Pride Month!

Every day, more and more LGBTQ+ youth feel comfortable coming out due to increased media representation, visibility, and peer support.

However, alcohol, marijuana, vape, and tobacco use are much higher in the LGBTQ+ community, especially in young people. Lack of acceptance, mental health struggles, alcohol and tobacco companies’ targeted marketing towards the community, and the fact that most LGBTQ-friendly spaces seem to be in bars and clubs all lead to higher rates of substance misuse.

Substance Abuse in the LGBTQ+ Community

Vaping has skyrocketed in popularity with students of all backgrounds. 66% of students say they believe the vapor in their e-cigs is “just flavor” and doesn’t contain nicotine. Most students report that they got into vaping because of curiosity, flavor variety, and the appeal of “safe” e-cigs over other “dangerous” substances. Coupled with increased rates of bullying and discrimination, LGBTQ+ youth are even more likely to pick up vaping as a coping mechanism.

Tobacco has had an even longer history with the LGBTQ+ community. According to the Truth Initiative, LGBQ+ and especially Trans young adults are 2x as likely to smoke cigarettes as straight young adults. Since the early 90’s, tobacco companies have marketed aggressively towards LGBTQ+ people through community-based publications and hosting “LGBT bar night” events.

Alcohol companies still use this targeted advertising in today’s LGBTQ+ events like Pride Parade sponsorships and Pride Month promotions.

How to Help

This Pride Month, it’s important to remember that you can celebrate who you love, your identity, and the LGBTQ+ community in a safe, sober way.

Here are a few ways to show your support:

  • Start or join a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA)/Queer Student Union organization at your school
  • Host or attend virtual or in-person sober Pride events
  • Empower your friends and remind them that they are not alone. Let them know their identities are valid and that they are accepted!

Final Word

Whether you’re a part of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, remember to show support and love to yourself during Pride Month and all year long. Celebrate responsibly, have sober fun, practice self-care, and find positive coping mechanisms when times get tough.

Please remember that you are not alone. Find your community locally or online, build your network of support, and celebrate your authentic self in safe, healthy ways.

We all have value. Whether you are in the LGBTQ+ community or know someone in the community, continue to love and support yourself and others by promoting sober fun!
